An impressive line-up of energy leaders from utilities, government, and academia gathered in Chicago for The Energy Times inaugural "Empowering Customers & Cities" conference. Anyone who attended was challenged to think about the future of utilities and the grid, inspired by a man who built a windmill to electrify his village and to examine new technologies and methods to drive change.

Chicago served as the centerpiece of the discussions because of its progress in bringing together different entities to move to the utility and city of the energy future.

Following are highlights of the summit, held Nov. 4-6 at the Sheraton Chicago, as leaders agreed and disagreed on issues that utilities must face as they deal with regulation and environmental concerns in surviving and thriving.
