New York State aims to get half of its electricity from renewables by 2030.

It plans to curb greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent and boost energy efficiency by 23 percent, according to Gregg Sayre, a member of the New York Public Service Commission.

Chicago's Commonwealth Edison is investing $2.6 billion to strengthen its grid across 11,000 miles of Illinois, according to Kevin Brookins, the utility's senior vice president of strategy and administration.

On top of that, it has mounted one of the largest energy efficiency campaigns in the nation, saving customers more than $1 billion in energy costs.
