Wind, Gas Generation Surge

The collapse of coal generation continues, wind and natural gas grow.

Wind turbines and natural gas generation unit deployments in America grew smartly in the first nine months of 2015, almost equaling the power output of closed coal-fired units, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The trends were gleaned from a new EIA database of about 20,000 operating power plants totaling more than 1 million megawatts.

The federal report shows that Ohio and Georgia saw the largest share of coal-plant retirements. Texas had the most wind and gas generation additions and California had the most solar generation come online through September 2015.
