As part of The Energy Times' Empowering Customers & Cities event in Chicago this November, several "Chicago Dive Experience" tours were offered to registrants on the final day, Nov. 6. Among the choices were the Shedd Aquarium, Silver Springs Networks and the Illinois Institute of Technology, and S&C Electric's Smart Grid Demonstration center.
David Chiesa, senior director of Global Business Development at S&C Electric hosted the tour, taking participants through the history of S&C and the liquid power fuse, a presentation on the old grid vs. the smart grid, how a pulse closer works compared to a recloser, and community energy storage and how it connects to the dynamic grid.
Many visitors have come through including legislators learning how important smart grid is to reliability and the modern grid as well as utilities learning how to best invest grants and plan rate cases.
Following are highlights of that tour.
