Entering the S&C Demonstration hall: The demonstration center allows electric utilities and other visitors to see, in real time, how smart grid technologies respond to grid issues and optimize power delivery systems.
Intellirupter Pulse Closer: Several generations of S&C Electric's products were on display. Here, visitors can get a close up view of the pulse closer fault interrupter. The interrupter is an alternative to conventional automatic circuit reclosers.
Reclosing v. Pulse Closing
Visitors watch a computer application that compares how a traditional recloser works compared to a pulse closer. Pulse closing confirms there is no fault on the line before initiating point-on-wave closing, which reduces stress on system components.

Automatic Restoration System
Housed in this vault is the IntelliTeam SG, a universal Smart Grid solution that automatically reconfigures the distribution system after a fault and quickly restores service to segments of the feeder which aren’t affected by the fault.
Also inside is the Intellinode Interface Module that enables intelligent electronic devices not of S&C manufacture to function as team members in an IntelliTeam SG Automatic Restoration System.
The demonstration center includes interactive exhibits that display S&C’s solutions such as self-healing technology, energy storage integration solutions and communications systems. "Smart grid to us means self-healing," David Chiesa said to the group.
Under the Lid
S&C Remote Supervisory Vista Underground Distribution Switchgear provides automated switching and fault protection and — when applied in S&C’s High-Speed Fault-Clearing System — can also perform auto-sectionalizing without tripping the main breaker. It incorporates the same features as Manual Vista Switchgear and can be specified with a communication and control equipment group, for a completely integrated, self-powered switching and protection package.

At the Edge of the Grid
The PureWave Community Energy Storage System features 25 kW of scalable energy storage at the edge of the grid.
Visitors watch (and listen to) a demonstration of a fault interruption and how a self-healing system operates. The center is a functioning lab as well. Chiesa said that S&C has obtained actionable data from demonstrations.

PJM Frequency Regulation Response
S&C's CES system is actually operating on the PJM frequency regulation response system.The six 25-kW Community Energy Storage systems provide fast-response frequency regulation for the PJM market. S&C is selling its CES-stored electricity to PJM through Intelligent Generation, which offers a networked software platform that facilitates optimization and bidding of distributed energy resources into wholesale electricity markets.

S&C began in 1911 when two engineers from Chicago-based Commonwealth Edison founded the company with the development of a breakthrough new product for power grids, the Liquid Power Fuse. This product improved reliability at utility substations, which were prone to frequent and very damaging flashovers during short circuits.
